H2 — What You’ll Need

  • Your Trezor hardware wallet (Model One or Model T)
  • USB cable that came with your device
  • A computer you trust (Windows, macOS, or Linux)
  • Pen and the included Recovery Seed cards
  • 10–20 minutes in a calm place without distractions

H2 — Before You Begin

Inspect the package for tampering and confirm the hologram seal is intact. Trezor devices don’t ship with pre‑set seeds or PINs. If anyone gave you a device with a written seed phrase, do not use it.

If something looks off, contact Trezor Support from the official site and discontinue setup.

H2 — Start at the Official Onboarding

H3 — Open the link

Visit trezor.io/start to download Trezor Suite, the desktop app that manages your device. The site auto‑detects your OS and offers the correct installer.

H3 — Install Trezor Suite

Run the installer and open Trezor Suite. You’ll be guided through connecting your device, installing/confirming firmware, and creating a secure PIN and recovery seed. Keep the app updated.

H2 — First‑Time Setup (Step‑by‑Step)

H3 — 1. Connect & Verify

Connect Trezor via USB. If prompted, install firmware directly from within Suite. Verify the on‑device fingerprint/identifier shown in Suite matches your device.

H3 — 2. Create a New Wallet

Choose Create new. The device will generate a brand‑new private key and display your Recovery Seed (usually 12, 18, or 24 words) on‑device.

H3 — 3. Back Up Your Recovery Seed

Write each word neatly on the provided card, in order. Never photograph, type, or store it online. Consider a fire/water‑resistant metal backup for long‑term durability.

H3 — 4. Set a Strong PIN

Use a non‑trivial PIN. You’ll enter it on the device (and sometimes through the Suite’s scrambled keypad), protecting against unauthorized access.

H3 — 5. Enable Optional Security

Advanced users can enable a passphrase (25th word) for extra security. Model T also supports Shamir backup (SLIP‑0039) for splitting your seed into multiple shares.

H2 — Day‑to‑Day Use

H3 — Accounts & Coins

Add accounts for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and many other assets in Suite. Each account derives addresses from your seed. Receive by verifying the address on‑device.

H3 — Sending Transactions

Initiate a send in Suite and always confirm the destination address on the device screen before approving. If the address differs, cancel immediately.

H3 — Firmware & App Updates

Keep firmware and Suite updated to get security patches and supported assets. Only update via the official app/site.

H3 — Privacy Tips

Use new receive addresses, consider CoinJoin (where legally allowed), and avoid re‑using addresses to minimize linkability.

H2 — Troubleshooting & Safety

H3 — Common Issues

  • Suite can’t detect device: Try another USB port/cable, re‑install the bridge/driver from the official site, or restart the app.
  • Wrong/forgotten PIN: After several wrong attempts, the device enforces delays. If you can’t recover the PIN, wipe and restore with your seed.
  • Phishing pop‑ups: Suite will never ask for your entire recovery seed inside the app, browser, or via chat. Seed entry happens only on the device, during recovery.

H3 — Red Flags

Anyone asking for your seed, asking you to type it on a website, or offering “remote help” is trying to steal your funds. Stop and verify at the official link.

H2 — Restore an Existing Wallet

H3 — When You Already Have a Seed

Select Recover wallet in Suite and enter your seed on the device, not on your computer. Confirm addresses after recovery to ensure you’re back in control.

H4 — Glossary

  • Recovery Seed: The backup to your private keys. Control of the seed = control of funds.
  • Passphrase: An optional secret that creates a separate hidden wallet. Memorize it—there’s no reset.
  • Firmware: The device’s operating software. Only install legitimate firmware from Trezor Suite.
H5 — Pro Tip

After recovery, send a small test transaction first to confirm you restored the correct wallet—especially if you use passphrases or multiple accounts.

H2 — Quick Checklist (Print/Save)

  • Opened trezor.io/start from a bookmark
  • Installed Trezor Suite and verified firmware
  • Created wallet and wrote seed clearly (kept offline)
  • Set PIN and (optionally) passphrase
  • Verified receive addresses on the device
  • Practiced a test restore (optional but recommended)
  • Keep Suite and firmware updated
